Uber Exit Sparks Fresh Trouble for Nigeria's Ride-Hailing Market

Uber's withdrawal from Nigeria has prompted vehicle financing firm Moove to follow suit, with the Lagos-founded company preparing to leave its home market despite a $2.1 billion valuation and ongoing expansion in the United States backed by Waymo. Moove's departure marks another blow to Nigeria's ride-hailing sector.

The development puts a spotlight on the long-term viability of mobility startups in markets where major operators pull out. Moove had grown its reputation around serving drivers in Lagos, making the exit particularly striking.

Meanwhile, Tesla's robotaxi plans have put pressure on Uber's stock and broader mobility shares as investors weigh the long-term threat on ride-hailing businesses. The investor concern reflects how fast the industry can shift when a major technology player enters the space.

In the UK, an Uber driver was among 25 cabbies stripped of their taxi licences over what authorities called a serious offence. The incident adds to scrutiny facing ride-hailing operators over driver vetting and oversight.
